What size painting above a sofa, bed or console?
What size painting should go above a sofa? Size is the most common reason people regret an art purchase, and these rules of thumb used by designers and galleries get you close every time.
What size painting above a sofa: the two-thirds rule
Above a piece of furniture, a painting (or a group of paintings) should be about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Much smaller and it looks lost; wider than the furniture and it looks top-heavy.
Size table
| Where | Typical furniture width | Painting width to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Above a 3-seat sofa | 84 in | 50–60 in (large) |
| Above a loveseat | 60 in | 36–42 in (large) |
| Above a king bed | 76 in headboard | 48–52 in |
| Above a queen bed | 60 in headboard | 36–42 in |
| Above a console or sideboard | 48–72 in | 30–48 in |
| Above a fireplace mantel | 60 in | 36–42 in, not wider than the mantel |
| Hallway or entry | no furniture | under 30 in, or a vertical work |
| Large empty wall, high ceiling | no furniture | 60 in and up (oversized) |
Our collection is grouped the same way: small (12–24 in), medium (24–36 in), large (36–60 in) and oversized (60 in and up), measured on the longest side.
How high to hang it
- On an open wall: center of the painting about 57 inches from the floor.
- Above furniture: bottom of the frame 8–10 inches above the sofa back, headboard or sideboard.
- Groups and multi-panel works: leave 2–4 inches between panels and treat the whole group as one piece when you measure.
Orientation
Horizontal (landscape) paintings suit long furniture like sofas and beds. Vertical (portrait) paintings suit narrow walls, the spaces between windows and stairwells. Square works are the most flexible and pair well in twos.
Check it before you buy
Cut paper or use painter’s tape to mark the outline on your wall and live with it for a day. On Bristoli Gallery, studio-photographed paintings have an “In a room” view that shows the painting at true scale above an 84-inch sofa, and our free art advisory will mock a painting up on a photo of your own wall.
Remember the frame
A frame usually adds 1 to 3 inches on each side. Our listed sizes are the painted canvas; every painting ships framed, so allow a little extra when you plan.
Frequently asked questions
What size painting should go above a sofa?
About two-thirds of the sofa’s width. For a standard 84-inch sofa that means a painting roughly 50 to 60 inches wide, or a pair of smaller works that together span that width. Hang it 8 to 10 inches above the back of the sofa.
What size painting should go above a queen or king bed?
Aim for two-thirds of the headboard width: about 40 inches for a queen (60 inches wide) and about 50 inches for a king (76 inches wide). Leave 8 to 12 inches between the headboard and the bottom of the frame.
How high should I hang a painting?
Hang it so the center of the painting is about 57 inches from the floor, the eye level galleries use. Above furniture, keep the bottom of the frame 8 to 10 inches above the furniture instead.
Is a bigger painting always better?
Usually one large painting looks calmer and more deliberate than several small ones on a big wall. But a painting should never be wider than the furniture below it, and in a narrow hallway you need to stand back far enough to see it whole.
