How to buy original oil paintings online
Buying an original painting you have only seen on a screen is easier than it sounds, as long as you know what to ask. This is the checklist we would give a friend.
1. Know what kind of artwork you are buying
Three very different things are sold as “oil paintings” online, often on the same page:
- Original oil painting: painted by hand on canvas by the named artist. Exists once.
- Hand-painted limited edition: the artist paints the same composition by hand a small, fixed number of times. Every canvas is a real painting, but not unique. The number should be stated and should never grow.
- Print, giclée or canvas transfer: a photographic reproduction, sometimes with a few brushstrokes added on top (“textured” or “hand-embellished”). Not a painting.
A trustworthy seller labels each one clearly on the page and on the certificate. If a listing avoids the words “original”, “hand-painted” or “edition of N”, ask.
2. Get the size right before anything else
Most regret comes from size, not from the image. Read the dimensions in inches, check whether they include the frame, and tape the outline on your wall. Above a sofa, a painting about two-thirds of the sofa’s width usually looks right: for a standard 84-inch sofa that is roughly 50 to 60 inches wide. Our painting size guide has a table for sofas, beds, consoles and hallways.
3. Look at the paint, not just the picture
Ask for a close-up of the brushwork and a photo from the side. Thick, raised strokes that catch the light are the clearest sign of a real oil painting. On Bristoli Gallery, works photographed in the studio have a detail view of the paint surface, and every painting is filmed for you before it ships.
4. Understand what the price includes
A $600 canvas can cost $900 once framing, crating, international shipping and import duties are added. Before you compare prices, check:
- Is it framed, stretched or shipped rolled in a tube?
- Is shipping included, and is it insured for the full price?
- Will you be charged duties or taxes on delivery?
At Bristoli Gallery every painting is framed and ready to hang, and insured delivery to the US is included in the listed price.
5. Know how you are protected
Most online galleries offer a return window after delivery. Returning a large framed painting is slow, though, and sometimes costly. We do it the other way round: after the artist signs your painting and it is framed, you receive a short video of the real piece (front, side light across the brushwork, close-ups, signature and frame) within 5–7 days. It ships only after you approve, and if you do not, you get a full refund. If anything is damaged in transit, send photos within 48 hours for a free repair or a full refund. Details are on our Buyer Protection page.
6. Ask for a certificate
A certificate of authenticity signed by the artist records the title, size, medium, date and, for editions, the number (for example “Edition 3 of 5”). Keep it with the painting; it matters if you ever insure, sell or gift the work.
7. Use an advisor when you are unsure
Good galleries will help you choose without pressure. Send a photo of your room, your colours and your budget and ask for a shortlist. Ours is free: Art Advisory.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to buy an original oil painting online?
Yes, if the seller tells you exactly what you are getting and protects you when it arrives. Look for the medium and exact size, whether it is one of a kind or an edition, a certificate signed by the artist, insured delivery, and a clear way out if the painting is not what you expected: a return window, or approval of the real painting before it ships.
How much should an original oil painting cost?
Original oil paintings by working contemporary artists commonly sell from a few hundred dollars for small canvases to several thousand for large ones. Size, the artist’s reputation, framing and shipping drive most of the price. At Bristoli Gallery most framed originals sell for $350 to $900, with large statement pieces higher.
How can I tell an original oil painting from a print?
An original has raised brushstrokes and paint texture you can see in side light, slight irregularities at the edges and a hand-painted signature. A print or canvas transfer is flat, with a regular dot pattern under magnification. Ask for close-up photos or a video in raking light before you buy.
What should I check before buying a painting online?
Check the exact size in inches including the frame, the medium, whether it is an original or an edition and how many exist, who painted it, what the price includes (frame, shipping, duties), how it is packed and insured, and what happens if you do not like it.
